Anchor Handling Tug and Anchor Handling Tug Support vessels are very similar, the only difference being that AHTS vessels have more space for supplies.
Both types are specially designed to; handle anchors for oil rigs, towing rigs to a location and securing them in place.
AHTS differ from other similar vessel types such as PSV’s (platform support vessel) as AHTS have been fitted with winches for anchor handling and towing. The stern of AHTS vessels are open to allow the docking of anchors. Anchor handling is not the only service AHTS vessels provide, they are sometimes used as Emergency Response, Rescue vessels and as supply transport. ROV (Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle) operations can also be launched for a AHTS vessel.
